Bachmann Spectrum Mogul 2-6-0

Engine

This 1:20.3 engine is a 2-6-0 modeled from the general time period of Baldwin Class 8-16D which was first produced in the 1870s.  It is a highly detailed replica of engines of that class.  It is a great base for super detailing a specific prototype of that era.  This engine was produced by Bachmann in the early 2000s and was closed out in 2003.  It is not known whether an additional run will occur.  While this engine listed at around $700, it was not uncommon to find them for sale at the end of the closeout period for $200 - $250.

Drive Train & Chassis

It is not known whether this chassis is available separately from the engine.  Even if available, it is likely the price would approach that of the complete engine at close out prices.  You might ask, "why would you destroy a perfectly good highly detailed Spectrum 2-6-0 to get the chassis?"  This highly detailed component may be worth $200-$250 by itself.  The tender, boiler and cab can be redirected to another project.  If this drive's specifications meet your needs and you are looking for a medium duty drive train, this chassis may fit your needs.

My lone Spectrum 2-6-0 is in the process of being based into North Pacific Coast No 13, a very similar Baldwin to the prototype.  As this project is nearly complete, I was reluctant to disassemble the engine to separate the drive train and chassis from the rest of the locomotive so my 2-6-0 photo is of a fully assembled engine.  Inspection of the drive train shows it to be very similar to the Spectrum 4-4-0 that I have in a disassembled state with the following exceptions.

  1. It has a two wheel rather than four wheel lead truck.

  2. An additional pair of drivers is in front of the lead 4-4-0 drivers.  This lead driver pair is driven by the side rods.

  3. The slider for the valve gear on the 2-6-0 is of a different type than on the 4-4-0.

Fully assembled 2-6-0.  The fire box attaches to the boiler in the same manner and at the same location as with the 4-4-0.

Both durability and pulling capacity are awaiting user feedback.
