Aristocraft C-16 2-8-0

Engine

The Aristocraft C-16 is modeled after the Baldwin 2-8-0 Consolidation.  It is great starting point for modeling an 1970s Baldwin Consolidation.  As David Fletcher demonstrated in the MLS MasterClass 2001 series, by removing the second pair of drivers, you are also able to model a Baldwin 2-6-0 Mogul of the same era.  This engine has many high quality components including the brass steam and sand domes the cylinders as well as a number of other well crafted parts.  Aristocraft bought the tooling for their Classic Narrow Gauge 1:24 scale series from Delton when they went out of business.

You may want to check David Fletcher's Web site for photos of a number of C-16 bashes.  Here's a photo of Fletch's 2-6-0 conversion as part of the MC 2001 series

Drive Train & Chassis

As the following photo shows, the C-16 chassis is made up of a plastic frame and a metal encased driver block.  Chapter 1 of the MasterClass 2001 series gives information on how to order drive train components from Aristocraft.  When I added up the cost of the components from Aristo, I decided it would be cheaper to purchase a complete engine.  I found mine on eBay for $150.

The plastic C-16 chassis frame is on the left and the metal driver block on the right.

Length is of driver block.  Width is across piston rods.  Height is from rail to top of driver block.  Note that the driver shafts are compatible with the Aristo Rogers drivers.  But there isn't enough space for these drivers given shaft spacing.

Drive Train Comments

George Schreyer comments that the drive train runs very well and pulls strongly.  See his C-16 Tips page at his site as well as the results of his Tractive Effort Tests.  Fletch thought enough of this drive train to base a MasterClass series around it. The C-16 gearing is noisy on most engines at first.  It will generally quiet down after some run time.  If the problem persists, updated parts are available from Aristocraft that will solve the problem.  An updated version is scheduled for mid-2004.  This page relates to the Aristocraft version produced prior to 2004.

David Fletcher in Chapter 2 of the Masterclass 2001 series gives instructions on how to lower this chassis to prototype heights, convert to a 2-6-0 Mogul, and tune the drive train.

Partially disassembled C-16 driver block.  Third driver has been removed as part of a conversion to a 6 wheel Mogul block.
