NPC, North shore, and Northwestern Pacific Engines
The North Pacific Coast acquired an impressive list of narrow gauge engines.
While most were manufactured by one of the NG locomotive manufacturers, two were
built in NPC shops.
When the NPC evolved into the North Shore, additional NG engines were
added. Some trackage was electrified and dual gauged.
When the North Shore became part of the Northwestern Pacific, the roster
expanded to include both NG and SG engines. As time went by, the SG
roster grew, and the NG engines were retired.
By the mid-1930s, even the NWP SG engines began to wear out and were
scrapped. Rather than purchase replacement engines, the NPW leased or
borrowed engines from the Southern Pacific.
In modeling these lines, I plan to model an early era (1875 - 1900) with NG
engines and rolling stock. I also plan to model a later era (1905 - 1945)
with SG engines and rolling stock.
Engines running on the line will fall into four classifications:
- NPC NG Engines - I hope to run at least one example of each major class of
engines that ran on the NPC. The table that follows is a complete
listing of the NPC NG roster. Those that are active or complete
projects are identified by a hyperlink and listed in the page's leftmost
column.
- North Shore Engines - The list is supplemented with North Shore NG engines
that I find interesting enough to add to the roster.
- Northwestern Pacific Engines - This was an extensive roster. I'm
listing only those engines that are active or finished projects.
- Southern Pacific Engines - Those engines that were borrowed or leased from
the SP and are active projects have been added to the list.
