North Shore No 40 - Project Plan
It would be tempting to re-letter an Aristo C-16 into North Shore No 40
without making any other changes to the engine. The Aristo model at 1:24
is a fairly good representation of the prototype. However, there were some
differences between the C-16 model and the D&RG engine that ultimately
became No 40 at the time she was manufactured.
Beyond those differences, she didn't become a North Shore engine until she
had already served a quarter of a decade for the D&RG. Many other
changes occurred in those years. Once she became a North Shore engine,
North Shore 40 was converted to an oil burner.
I want to model her late in her career. I also want to correct some
shortcomings in the Aristo model. All these changes push what could have
been a Level 1 bash into the Level 2 category.

This is the lone shot of No 40 as a North Shore engine, shot at the
Sausalito docks. She had been converted to an oil burner.

This shot, from an almost identical angle shows the Aristo C-16 that
will be bashed into NS No 40. |
Here is a list of changes that are envisioned to be made to the C-16.
 | Convert the pilot from the road pilot to the freight pilot shown in the
above photo. |
 | Change the headlight from an oil burner to electric. A prototype
photo of generator location will need to be found. |
 | Switch the stack to a straight stack. |
 | Change the cab from a rounded top to a peak roof. Remove the panes
from the side windows as part of the bash. |
 | Lower the frame to a more prototypical level. |
 | Raise the running boards to a more prototypical level. Add the
air tank to the running board as shown in the picture. |
 | Convert the tender from a wood burner to a oil burner. |
 | Raise the dome heights slightly, |
 | Letter her for the North Shore. |
 | There are a number of detail changes that are not currently on the list
but will be added. |
