North Shore No 40 - Baldwin 2-8-0

Shortly after the North Pacific Coast became the North Shore Railroad in 1902, the North Shore acquired three Baldwin 2-8-0 engines, No 31, 33 & 40.  No 40 was originally purchased by the Denver & Rio Grande from Baldwin in 1880 (Builder No 4974) and carried the name Texas Creek.  She carried D&RG road number 44, was a Baldwin Class 56, had 36 inch drivers, cylinders of 15 x 18 inches, and a weight of 56,000 pounds.

Acquired in 1903, she carried No 40 on the North Shore.  She survived into the Northwestern Pacific era and carried engine No 321 beginning in 1908.  According to Stindt, she was retired a year later as she had seen her days.  Dickenson indicates she was scrapped in 1915.

This is the lone shot of No 40 as a North Shore engine, shot at the Sausalito docks.  She had been converted to an oil burner.

The challenge is how to model this engine with existing large scale components.  When I began working on the NPC, I made a commitment to 1:20.3.  Every NPC engine I'm working on is a 1:20.3 implementation.  But, other than a BBT drive, there isn't a whole lot out there in 2-8-0.  And Barry has a huge backlog for reasons known to his friends.

But there is a 2-8-0 in narrow gauge, but it's a 1:24 engine, Aristocraft's C-16.  And Masterclass 2001 was built in this drive train and David Fletcher did a magnificent bash of a C-16 into another C-16.  Here's a photo of that engine.

What a gorgeous engine.  So after procrastinating over whether to build a 1:24 engine to run on a 1:20.3 railroad for longer than I should I went out on eBay and captured an Aristo C-16, new in the box, but damaged slightly in shipping (cracked cab).  A second C-16 was acquired on e-Bay, primarily as a parts engine.  

Both are wood burning versions and have many of the components that would have been found on an 1880 Baldwin 2-8-0.  One of the two drive trains will be used to model NPC No 1, a Baldwin Mogul.  The second will be used to model NPC No 40.

 

 With her 1.5 inch drivers, she's right on with North Shore No 40's 36 inch driver at 1:24.  But other than a few specs and one photo, I don't have much information.  I wonder what the folks at MLS can dig up.

DRG Sisters

Here are photos of two Aristo C-16 bashes from David Fletcher's Web site.  Both are Baldwin Class 56 engines.  The first, No 52, 'Music Pass' was done by Jim Wilke and is in as delivered colors.  The second is No 71, 'Pacific Slope', and was done by David.  Visit David's Web Site for more photos of these two bashes.

D&RGW Baldwin Prototypes

The research data is here.  The Aristo C-16 is in my basement.  But there are four engines in front of her in the que.  I'll update this page when this project goes into an active phase.
