NPC Engine No 9 - M.S. Latham

Among the first engines purchased by the North Pacific Coast were seven Baldwin 4-4-0 Americans.  These engines, purchased in 1874 and 1875  were Baldwin Class 18-8-Cs.  They had cylinders with 12 inch diameters and 16 inch strokes, and driver diameters of 42 inches.  Total wheelbase was 18 feet 7 inches with a driver wheelbase of 7 feet 6 inches.

Of the seven Americans purchased by the NPC from Baldwin, this project will focus on Number 9, the M.S. Latham.  This engine was ordered with a great deal of custom decoration, serving as the President's engine.  It was involved in a number of accidents and played a starring role in the Austin Creek Accident in 1894.  Some of its parts were used in building Engine No 17.

Prototype

Only one photo is known of this engine.

The Model

I'm looking to pick up another Bachmann Spectrum 4-4-0 at closeout prices in the next few weeks.  Here's one up for bids at the present time.

This project is on hold until pending purchase of a suitable engine.
