NPC Engine No 8, Bully Boy

The Bully Boy was delivered to the North Pacific Coast in 1877.  The first of the smaller 0-6-6T's, the Bully Boy sported a number of advanced features for the time including Walschaerts Valve Gear.  This engine had a rather checkered career on the NPC.  It derailed frequently -- on one memorable occasion twice the same evening.  It was also involved in at least two engine house fires.  The last in fire in Tomales destroyed the Bully Boy in 1905.  No 8 was scrapped in 1912.

In between, it served as a second train for Mill Valley and was a frequent picnic train engine.  In later years it served as a work train engine.

Prototype

We have only located two photos of the Bully Boy.

Builders photo of the Bully Boy of the North Pacific Coast Railroad at Mason Factory in 1877.

This is the same builders photo.  It is a scan of an original in the 1879 Mason Narrow Gauge Locomotive Catalog.  Click photo for a larger image.  Click here for a larger digitally enhanced version of this photo.

Photo and catalog from the Keith Christenson collection.  Thanks Keith.

Shot leaving the Sausalito train shed in Picnic Train service.

A number of changes occurred between pictures.
bulletSmoke stack
bulletSquare rather than rounded windows.
bulletAir brakes - tanks under cab.
bulletElectric replaced kerosene light.

You can't see a rear pilot in this photo or the builders photo.  But given her history of two way operation, it's likely she had one.

This drawing shows her with a rear pilot.  It's likely she also had a rear headlight.

The Model

I'll be scratch building the Bully Boy as part of the MasterClass 2002 project at MyLargeScale.com.  Power will come from a custom Barrys Big Trains drive train.

The Bully Boy is subject of two of the standard options in the MC 2002 class.

bulletOption 5 - As built - builders photo.
bulletOption 6 - Later in her life - later photo.

I like the look of the Bully Boy in her builder's photo and 1870s cab.  She will be modeled as delivered.

David Fletcher has been kind enough to produce a CAD drawing of the Bully Boy.  I'll base the construction on his drawing, these photos, and the detailed instructions he has prepared for MC 2002.

This project is on hold until fall.
