NPC Engine No 13

This was the only 2-6-0 Mogul run by the North Pacific Coast, other than No 1, the Sauselito which only was with the line for the first two years.  It was delivered by Baldwin in 1883, and was retired in 1912.  It was used most extensively in freight and pusher service.

Prototype

The following three photos have been located of this engine.

In this shot taken just before the turn of the century, she is sporting the NPC initials on her tender as she heads north out of Tomales.

This shot was taken on the 4th of July in Occidental in 1902.

The Model

I picked up a Bachmann Spectrum Mogul in the fall of 2002.  This Mogul will be kitbashed and lettered as No 13.  Here is a photo of an undecorated Mogul similar to the one I purchased.

The Bachmann Spectrum Mogul is a very close replica of No 13.  Differences in dimensions are sufficiently small as to require very few modifications to the engine.  The Bachmann tender is also very close to No 13s.  Before proceeding with modifications, I needed to select the photo that most closely represents the equipment I want to model.  I chose the first photo showing lettering and equipment around 1898.  I like this shot in that she was wearing the NPC's green, yellow, red logo on her tender.  I also like the look of the stack and hungry boards.

Given that photo and equipment configuration, I will need to make the following modifications.  Click active links for progress reports on these modifications.
bulletEngine
bulletConvert the electronics in the engine for radio controlled battery power.
bulletConvert the stack to a Radley Hunter stack.
bulletApply the engine number to the cab and number board.
bulletAdd any additional piping and other exterior detail parts that are appropriate.
bulletConvert couplers to link and pin.
bulletTender - General Disassembly Instructions
bulletBuild a set of hungry boards that are as close to those in the photo as possible.
bulletConvert the load from a coal load to a real wood load.
bulletConvert the electronics in the tender for radio control battery power.
bulletApply the NPC logo as a decal to the tender.
bulletAdd underbody brake rigging piping and other details
bulletConvert couplers to link and pin.
bulletAdd detail parts to make the tender look a little more 'lived in'.
