No 13 - Tender Hungry Boards

Hungry boards are a common feature on wood burning engines.  They provide additional height and support for wood piled over the top of the tender.  The hungry boards on No 13 are rather unusual in that they appear to be fabricated out of iron pipe and iron strap.  There is at least a good chance they were fabricated at the NPC shops as they are seen on at least one of the Baldwin 4-4-0s in other NPC photos,

Based on takeoffs from this photo and the vertical tender height from the model, here are the key dimensions.  The first two columns are in millimeters.  The last two convert millimeters on the model to inches and sixteenths of an inch.  For example, the width of the straps are .15 inch on the model.  That translates to 3 inches at 1:1.  The pipe would be 2 inches at 1:1.

Dimension Photo Model Inches Sixteenths 1:1 Inches
Tender top height 31.58 54.67 2.15

43.7

Hungry Bar Rack Height 11.23 19.44 0.77 12.2 15.5
Iron Strap Height 2.58 3.86 0.15 2.4 3.0
Top Pipe Diameter 1.48 2.56 0.10 1.6 2.0

Fabricating the hungry boards is a bit of a challenge due to the thickness of the metal strap.  Styrene is out of the question as in the kind of thickness in this hungry board would be way too flimsy.  So I visited the hobby shop and came up with the following two items.

  1. K&S 1.6 mm (.06 inch) Brass rod - 36 inches - about $1

  2. K&S 4 x 10 brass sheet in .17mm (.005 inch) thickness - $1.75

I'll used tin snips to cut the sheet into strips modeling the iron strap.  Then I soldered the hungry board parts together.
