NPC No 1 Boiler & Deck

Making the Boiler

The boiler of NPC No 1 was constructed using PVC pipe intended for use in plumbing applications.  It is labeled as 1 1/4" but has an outside diameter of 1.67".  It was cut to a length of 6.7"

The upper boiler in this shot is for NPC No 1.

The lower boiler is for a Glover coal engine.

Aluminum L Channel was laid on the boiler.  Its edge was used to draw an alignment line marking the top of the boiler.
Once the line was drawn, a sheet of paper was wrapped around the boiler.  Lines drawn on the paper mark the beginning and end of the boiler circumference.
The diameter was measured.  A third line was drawn at the midpoint of the two overlap marks.

The paper was then wrapped around the boiler with the midpoint on the top alignment line.  The point at which the overlaps align at the bottom of the boiler was used to mark the bottom alignment line.

A template for boiler dimensions and cut can be found in the MasterClass Articles section of MyLargeScale.com.

The bottom alignment line was used to mark the borders of the slot that needed to be cut to clear the Aristocraft C-16 motor block.  The slot has been cut in the top boiler in this photo.

The slot is 1.87" long and 1.24" wide.

The top engine in the left photo shows the boiler placed on the C-16 frame.

The Glover coal engine chassis is the lower of the two in this photo.

Cutting the Deck & Running Board

The Deck and running board were cut from 2 mm styrene using a template from MasterClass 2001.

A template with dimensions for this cut can be found in the MasterClass Articles section of MyLargeScale.com.  The template shows the dimensions of the deck and running board.

This shot shows the deck and running boards cut from styrene.

This shot shows the deck and running board as well as the boiler placed on the chassis.
