Sausalito Tunnel to San Rafael - Trackage 1

The trackage in this section includes the main line from Sausalito to San Anselmo, the San Anselmo Junction and yards, the branch line from San Anselmo to San Rafael, the San Rafael yards, and the branch line from San Rafael to San Quentin Landing.  San Quentin Landing will extend into a water feature scheduled for construction in the spring of 2008.  So this line will be connected to the main line heading out of San Anselmo and running through the lower tunnel.  This temporary connection will allow for continuous loop operation in the summer of 2007.

Prototype Track Plan

This map shows the NPC main line trackage from Sausalito to San Anselmo, continuing to Manor.  It also shows the branch line from San Anselmo to San Rafael and San Quentin Landing.  A branch line also extends to Mill Valley.

To the left is the prototype track plan for San Anselmo for 1900.  The above photo from 1898 does not show all the structures on the plan.

This image shows the NPC track plan in San Rafael.  There were two stations on the NPC line, one the West End Station and the other the B Street Station.

NPC Garden RR Track Plan

All major trackage on the prototype track plan will be modeled with the following modifications.

bulletThe Sausalito Shops and Sausalito Dock will be modified indoors in my basement family room.  Sausalito will be connected to San Anselmo with a line that will run into the unimproved portion of my basement through a basement window to the outdoors.  The indoor portion is scheduled for construction in the winter of 2007-8.  The indoor and outdoor lines will be connected in the spring of 2008.
bulletThe branch line to Mill Valley will be modeled but not in the location shown on the map.  It will be taken off after San Anselmo which will allow it to come off at the bottom of the hill in my back yard.
bulletThe water feature to be installed in this section will play the role of San Anselmo Creek as well as the portion of San Francisco Bay containing San Quentin Landing.
bulletThe yards in San Anselmo will be modeled in mirrored form allowing the branch to San Rafael to be to the West, rather than the East in the prototype.

To the left is a horizontally reversed image of the San Anselmo track plan, the way in which it will be modeled.  Beginning with the line coming from San Francisco at the bottom of the image, the branch to San Rafael will exit to to the left through a tunnel under the staircase.  The branch to Cazadero, shown exiting to the right, will loop back left and pass through the lower tunnel in the staircase.  San Anselmo Creek will begin to the left of the track from San Francisco and will cross over to the right.  From there it will follow the main line toward Cazadero as it does in this reversed image.   Structures shown on the track plan will be modeled as well as sidings and the wye.  Not all structures are shown in the above 1898 photo.

This photo shows the general area in which San Anselmo will be constructed.  The main line from Sausalito will enter from the bottom of the photo. The branch line to San Rafael will curve left and pass through the upper tunnel under the staircase in the middle of the photo.  Meanwhile the main line to Cazadero will turn right then loop left, passing through the lower tunnel near the middle right edge of the photo.  The San Anselmo yards will be located just above the lower tunnel, ending near the staircase.

Once the line to San Rafael has passed through the upper tunnel (barely visible on the right side of the photo), it will traverse the hill looping back to the lower tunnel at the left of the photo.  While traversing this loop, the San Rafael yards will be modeled.

Once the line leaving San Rafael has passed through the power tunnel it will extend to the lower holding pond of the water feature.  The San Quentin docks will be modeled in the water feature.

At this point no final decisions have been made as to how the San Rafael yards will be modeled.  When the decision has been made, an update will be posted.
